Program Comment for the Preservation of Pre-1919 Historic Army Housing, Associated Buildings and Structures, and Landscape Features

The Army is faced with the extraordinary obligation of managing the largest inventory of historic housing in the federal government. The Army has over 30,000 historic homes subject to the requirements of the NHPA and the compliance procedures in 36 CFR 800.

In May 2024, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation overwhelmingly approved the Army Program Comment for Pre-1919 historic housing addressing approximately 865 homes located on 19 Army installations in 14 states. The Program Comment for Pre-1919 housing reflects a shift occurring in historic preservation that prioritizes the needs of people living in and managing historic homes equally with preservation of the material integrity of the homes.
